We’ve already talked about her once before so lets cut the chit chat and get right to things, re-introducing Honey Larochelle.
When was music it for you, when did that light bulb go off?
Well, my mom was a singer, so that’s all I’ve ever done. It’s sort of like taking over the family business so to speak.
Who are some of your musical influences, your sound seems closely rooted to the neo-soul sound?
Well, my mom raised me on soul and acceppella. So Stevie, Prince, and Take 6, were the ones I loved most. Also, Anita Baker. But over the years developing my sound, I was definitely touched by many of the neo-soul era as well as rock n roll, hip hop and funk. Jill Scott, and Erykah Badu or course, the Beatles, Gavin Degraw, Dave Matthews, and so many more have influenced me for a time or a season…
The Tastemakers Society prides itself on finding tastemakers and one thing for sure is Jerry Lorenzo Manuel and Javier “Leber” Laval are definitely tastemakers in every since. They help cultivate lifestyles by having their hands deep in the cookie jar making sure to spread them around to as many as they can. And they’re talents don’t end there both had plans to be professional athletes, and read on to see who would come out on top as the better athlete.
We never leave you alone on New Music Tuesdays. What up, world? Fly. Union is back in the place with an interview. Managed to catch them (you know ’cause their flyin’ and stuff?) long enough to get a glimpse of their life and their perspective on this thing we call hip-hop. Don’t get left behind, these dudes are sneaking in the game any which they can. Oh yea, “Kill Fly. U” and “Close Doors, Open Windows” for download online right now.
Knowledge is power. So here at TTS, we spread the wealth with the introduction of U-N-I to your music library. Comprised of Y-O and Thurzday, this Los-Angeles based group has a fondness for sneakers (hence their anthem Kicks Rule Everything Around Me) and the original Nintendo. And, good music? Of course. Otherwise, you think we’d put them up there? So, put your toy guns down and grab your drink of choice, we can only serve you the “Fried Chicken & Watermelon.” Now, you have to taste it. Enjoy.
New Music Tuesday brings you Outasight a Yonkers, New York native and birth name Richard Andrew grew up with a mother who used records to decorate the walls and his father played guitar. That natural born gift coupled with his love for music all music has given birth to a completely original sound. Outasight can make your girls R&B dreams come true with his unique vocal tone or he can have your man haten cause his rhymes are better than his. Either way Outasight’s music is outasight (I know, corny line but I couldn’t resist). Read up on Outasight in this NMT feature and learn what it’s like to be in the studio with him, the groupie debate and his fondness for Family Guy.
Dezeen has a podcast interview with Italian designer Patricia Urquiola while she was at the Design Museum in London. Urquiola talks about her current exhibition, Purely Porcelain, that’s on display until January 25th.
Allow me to introduce Craig “space” Hackey, a TTS team member. Melissa from Emperial Nation has started a interview series her 2nd inductee into her series catalog was none other then Mr. Craig Hackey. Listen to Craig talk about bad questions and cutting grass.
Maybe you live under a rock, if you don’t then you’ve seen one of Improv Everywhere’s missions, maybe their ”no pants” mission, or their “frozen in grand central” mission, or one of their countless others they’ve pulled off. No matter what they seem to pull off you can be sure that Improv Everywhere will make it something worthwhile and entertaining. I caught up with Charlie Todd the founder of Improv Everywhere and had him run down some things for me, like his favorite missions, how IE got started (drinks and college buddies), and what the future holds.
There’s handmade and then there’s Sruli Recht handmade, blood trickling handmade is what Recht specializes in. Technically you’d describe him as a designer but in hind sight that would be too restricting, a more appropriate title would be, ‘maker of things’, which would pretty much cover anything, which is exactly what Recht handles, everything. Sruli Recht an Iceland native has mastered the ability to create, it sounds relatively easy, but think about it, he made a mobile cutting table, a belt, a rug, shoes, need I go on more, he can jump from project to project and you would never be able to guess what was coming next.
One of the most creative publications in the world, Visionaire, hooked up with one of my favorite fashion publications, JC Report. Justin Campbell of JC Report caught up with Cecilia Dean, editor/co-founder of Visionaire magazine, and put together a really good interview. It talks about the beginning of Visionaire, how thay’ve managed to stay independent for 17 years, and their crazy creative process. They’re one of the most creative pblications in the world, and they are a steady flow of creativity and inspiration, just take for instance their next issue will be the very first Pop-Up magazine issue ever, at least to my knowledge.
If you read a variety of magazines there’s a chance you may have read one of Matthew Newton’s articles. Newton is many things a writer an editor, a father, a book publisher but the simplest way maybe to describe him would be as a man with a computer trying to write something worthwhile. Living in what he calls the city of Champions, Pittsburgh, PA (which I’d have to kindly disagree) Matt Newton, 31, spends time researching, typing, editing, retyping, editing some more, pitching, and so on, to write material he loves but at the same time in a way helping make sure others are entertained or taught something from his work. His late nights, countless hours of staring at a computer screen are all really as much a benefit for us then it is for him, yes, he gets his satisfaction, but his one piece can bring much more to many others who read it. So pull up a chair, grab a snack, and take a look into the life and mind of Matthew Newton. And remember next time you read an acrticle that someone somewhere may have spent a night fueled off Red Bull and chips, and that same someone could easily be Matthew Newton.
